The Arts Course Selection, 2015 to 2016
It's that time of year again where you need to select your courses for next year...
At FMSS, we have many Arts Courses to allow you to customize your Arts Experience. This means that you can take as many Arts courses as you have space in your optional choices for each year. What will your Arts courses do for you? If you continue to take your chosen courses all four years including grade 12, these courses will help boost your average to get you to whatever post-secondary destination you want. OR, your FMSS Arts courses will set you up to achieve well in post-secondary Arts-based courses. You will be prepared for portfolio reviews, performance interviews, etc. Finally, you will have FUN in your Arts courses. So, all great reasons to make great choices when choosing your courses for next year.
Please note, if you can't sign-up for the courses that you know you have pre-requisites for, PLEASE come talk to Mrs. Showalter immediately!

Students at FMSS are encouraged to customize their Arts Experience. This means that students are able to take as many Arts courses as they like to tailor their own unique path during their four years at FMSS. Which Arts Course(s) will allow you to explore your voice?
· Grade Twelve 4M Arts Courses are recognized by all College and Universities, regardless of your Post-Secondary Destination. Check Pre-requisites for individual programs of study.
· Success in your Grade Twelve Arts courses can help maintain/build your highest six classes average that you will use for application to Post-Secondary. How will you make sure that you get your highest grade 12 average?
A significant number of Arts students choose to go on in the Arts at post-secondary after having received a strong foundation at FMSS. How will you use your Arts Courses to plan your future?

Dance
The Dance program teaches foundational skills in dance technique, composition and artistry. Students receive unique educational experiences in dance forms such as Ballet, Jazz, Modern, African, Cultural and Social Dances. In addition, students develop their understanding of the human body through anatomy, fitness, mind-body health and alternative methods like pilates and yoga. The Dance Studio is fully functional with stage lighting, surround sound system, make-up/dressing room, studio mirrors and a sprung floor. Students may enhance their learning by joining several dance-focused extra-curricular clubs that participate in events like the Peel Dance Showcase.
Drama
Drama is all about expressing yourself, examining issues and telling stories through performance. A variety of dramatic styles and techniques are explored that include mime, choral speaking, mask, improv, monologues and scene study. The performance aspect of this course is mainly focused on the group dynamic and solving problems together combined with significant elements of individual work. With sound systems and lighting racks in each studio, you’ll learn production and some of the behind-the-scenes aspects like lighting and sound. In addition, we look at the history of theatre, a variety of cultural approaches to drama, film study and different genres of performance.
Media Arts
The Media Arts program offers students current and cutting edge technology. These courses incorporate graphic design, digital photography, digital video and television broadcast. Students work both individually and in interdisciplinary teams for all projects. Issues surrounding how the media in every form affects culture and meaning are explored in depth. Current equipment, computer labs and industry-experienced teachers enhance learning and provide students with practical work skills and knowledge. Media Arts students develop portfolio-quality work for those wishing to pursue this growing industry for further study.
Music
Fletcher’s Meadow SS boasts a comprehensive Music program. Many options of study are available to student as they explore this complex and rewarding art form. Classes include instrumental, guitar and keyboarding, jazz studies, computers and music, vocal and composition. Several high quality performing ensembles are currently running: Concert Band, Jazz Band and Choir. Our unique program strives to incorporate technology into all aspects of music education which has created many opportunities for students to learn through diverse, cross-curricular studies.
Visual Arts
Our Visual Arts program examines art forms from diverse cultures and uses it as a source of inspiration to create meaningful work. Students develop practical art-making skills and techniques as they work with a wide variety of media; drawing, painting, printmaking, clay work and sculpture along with many others. Critical thinking skills are combined with artistic vision to give students a voice to explore important issues. The Visual Arts courses are enhanced with our focused Drawing and Painting stream. Students are equipped with the necessary skills to create a portfolio of work, complete with sketchbooks of engaged imagery and ideas, to apply to post-secondary programs.
