Post-Secondary Considerations
How many times have you been asked, 'What are you going to do after high school?' Since Junior Kindergarten, you have been preparing to complete high school and then move on with your life. Everyone's path will be different. What will yours look like? Some big questions that you need to consider individually and with your family's input.
This page should help you start to think about your potential pathways after high school.
- What do you want to study? Is this an area that you are passionate about? What do you want your future to look like?
- Where do you want to study? Will you stay at home and commute (definitely the cheaper option) or will you choose a destination where you live in residence or an apartment?
- Have you visited the post-secondary institution(s)? Does it/they feel right to you?
- What program(s) interest you? Where are they? How are they different? What is the right match for you?
- Have you taken all of the prerequisite classes that you need?
- Do you need to create a portfolio? All of the post-secondary institutions will have different requirements, so please read carefully and print them off. Come see me if you have any questions.
- Have you talked to your parents/family about what you want to do?
- Have you looked at all of your options? College, college/university combo programs of study, university, apprenticeship programs, etc.
- Realistically, how many hours will you really need to devote to academics to do well?
- How will you stay focused/motivated? Who are your support system?
- How much have you saved? Have you calculated a budget? Have you and your parents (or the person in charge of you) talked about how this endeavour is going to be financed?
- Are you thinking about a part-time job to help you pay your way?
- How will you balance your life? What activities, etc are important to your life that you need to fit into a post-secondary schedule?
This page should help you start to think about your potential pathways after high school.
To my students: this page is for you to help you start planning this next major step in your life. If you come across any links/sites that you think should be on this page, please share them with me in class. Also, if there are any links that don't act the way they should, please let me know. Now the fun begins, what will you decide you want to do next?
Art Portfolio Interviews
Congratulations on applying to post-secondary Arts-based program(s)!
It is extremely important that you go to the post-secondary institution website(s) and print off all of the portfolio requirements for each program that you apply to (even if you have applied to a couple of different programs at the same institution - the requirements may be different). You should do this as soon as possible because it will take you longer to assemble your portfolio than you think!
Assuming that all things go to plan, a representative from the post-secondary program will get in touch with you to discuss interview times (if required) to alert you to their process. Take careful note of the instructions as you will be responsible (save emails, etc).
When you go to talk to Mrs Showalter, please bring the specific guidelines and all of the work that you will be including in your portfolio.
Finally, when you go to your portfolio review, take your current sketchbook (and past one if you have it). It is really important that the interviewers see your creative thinking.
