Welcome to Grade Ten Visual Arts! Please find below the units of study for this semester. However, don't be alarmed if you see information/documents from previous years; I like to experiment with new things, just like you. If you are paying attention in class, there shouldn't be a problem… Have fun as you develop and create your work this semester. Unit 1: Clay Chalice
Clay has been used to make functional and artistic objects by people since shortly after the discovery of fire. You will learn several clay building techniques that you will use to create a clay chalice. A chalice is a special cup that is used on special occasions. You will combine the requirements of the project to design your own clay chalice. Please find below a list of formative assignments (building block skill development sketchbook assignments) along with the summative assignments (projects) and response journal/evaluations.

Unit 2: Stenciled Self-Portrait
This unit will combine self-portraiture with the technique of stencilling. Please find below a list of formative assignments (building block skill development sketchbook assignments) along with the summative assignments (projects) and response journal/evaluations.
- Anatomy of a Portrait (note + sketchbook drawing/diagram)
- Self-Portrait (using a mirror in sketchbook)
- Transformation of Self-Portrait to a Stencil (positive/negative space)
- Incorporation of Signature within Portrait

Unit 3: Toning and Substitution
Substitution is a creative technique which can add interest to a composition. You will also learn to use pencil crayon as your medium in a sophisticated manner. Students will learn to look and draw what they see (still life, lights/shadows & proportion). Unit 4: Graphic Line and Nightmares
The power of line is what makes comic books, graphic novels and ink drawings so dynamic. You will learn pen and ink techniques that will be transferred to scratchboard. Next, choose a location inside/outside of FMSS and create a twist to the location adding suspense or a psychological twist. Unit 5: People Helping People
The world has experienced many significantly important humanitarians over the history of humanity. This unit is directly inspired by the life and message of Nelson Mandela who recently passed away. You will make a combination of text, portraiture and watercolour to create your final work, this term.
